In New Delhi There is no official boycott by the DMK, of the Prime Minister's annual dinner on Sunday to mark the completion of UPA II’s second year in office.

In fact, DMK MPs were instructed to be present for the event. Yet, with Kanimozhi, the darling daughter of the DMK first family locked away in Tihar Jail, the over two dozen DMK MPs (18 Lok Sabha and seven Rajya Sabha MPs) are in no mood to party at 7 Race Course Road.

The annual PM’s dinner party is to celebrate achievements of the UPA government. With 18
MPs DMK is the second largest UPA ally after the Trinamool Congress which has 23 MPs.

Senior DMK minister and Kani's brother M K Alagiri is likely to skip the dinner.

The Union Fertiliser Minister is not only angry with the Congress, he is also upset with his stepsister for destroying the DMK by getting involved in the telecom scam.

Over a dozen MPs who rushed to Delhi to be present with Kani in Patiala Court were all seen rushing back to Chennai.

“Of course, we have been asked by DMK high command to attend the PM's dinner. But we don't feel like attending the event. Most of us have already begun to hunt for excuses to skip the event. But I presume at least half a dozen DMK MPs will put in  an appearance at the UPA dinner,” admitted a party MP, who claimed he had to tend  to his ailing wife.

Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Shiva, said, “I have some urgent work back home. I promise to come back on Sunday.”

DMK sources said the party leadership has not been happy with the way the Congress has handled the 2G scam, allowing two of its leaders - Kani and former telecom minister A Raja - to get arrested and put behind bars in Tihar jail.

 Kanimozhi, Raja appear in court

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) lawmaker Kanimozhi and former Telecom Minister A Raja were on Saturday produced before a special court here in connection with the 2G spectrum scam.

Kanimozhi's mother and DMK leader T R Baalu were also present in the court. Her counsel told mediapersons that she would move the Delhi High Court for bail.

A special CBI court on Friday refused to grant bail to her and Kalaignar TV managing director Sharad Kumar

BJP-Cong face off over BSY-Bhardwaj tussle

Mysore/Raichur: Both the Congress and BJP held protests across Karnataka on Saturday, BJP is demanding that the governor should convene an assembly session immediately and also that the union government should recall the governor. The congress, on the other hand, has demanded for the removal of the BS Yeddyurappa-led government.

The BJP protests is being divided into two teams one led by chief minister BS Yeddyurappa and the other by state party president KS Eshwarappa and they willl be holding rallies across karnataka from Monday onwards.
Addressing the 'hatao Governor, Bacchao Karnataka' (remove Governor, save Karnataka) rally in Raichur, Yeddyurappa mounted a blistering attack on Bhardwaj accusing him of trying to rule the state by dismissing the elected government.

"The Governor wanted to rule the state for six months. A few months ago, he suggested to me to dissolve the Assembly so that he will get six months to rule. Bhardwaj also told me that after the elections, BJP may come back to power," he told the gathering stepping up his attack on Bhardwaj.

Yeddyurappa, who would lead the anti-governor rallies in four more districts, asserted that the Governor would not succeed in his "attempts to dislodge" the BJP Government which enjoyed "clear majority".

At Mysore, state unit BJP President K S Eswarappa led the rally and urged President Pratibha Patil to recall Bhardwaj immediately. He asked the Centre to reject the Governor's report recommending dismssal of the Yeddyurappa Government.

Eswarappa charged Bhardwaj with attempting to dislodge the elected Government at the behest of the Congress and JDS despite it enjoying majority.
He also flayed the Governor for refusing nod for convening the legislature session from June 2 as sought by the Government for passage of full budget to implement programmes outlined in the 2011-12 budget.

Setting a five-day deadline for Bhardwaj's recall, the BJP has announced rallies against him in Mangalore, Tumkur, Kolar, Bangalkot, Chitradurga, Bellary, Koppal, Gulbarga and Bidar till May 25.

While Yeddyurappa will lead the rally in four more districts apart from Raichur, Eswarappa led team will visit five more districts.

The Governor last week sent a special report recommending dismissal of the Yeddyurappa government in the wake of the Supreme Court quashing the disqualification of 11 rebel BJP and five independent MLAs by the Assembly Speaker ahead of a trust vote sought by the Chief Minister in October 2010.
A meeting of the Union Government's Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday deferred a decision on the report till Sunday, continuing the suspense over the fate of the BJP Government.

Goof-up wake-up call for agencies: Chidambaram

New Delhi: Home Minister P Chidambaram on Saturday said the "embarrassing" goof-up in the 'most wanted fugitives list' given to Pakistan is a wake up call to security agencies to become more professional but ruled out giving any apology for the lapse.

He also said that the goof-up does not damage government's credibility and it will "not change the dynamics" of Indo-Pak relationship or the status of discussions between them.

Chidambaram also dismissed suggestions that after this blunder, Pakistan will grow dismissive about India's repeated requests to handover terror suspects sheltered in that country.

"I don't think it damages credibility. I think it is a wake up call for the agencies to become more professional," he said to Karan Thapar on 'Devil's Advocate' programme on a private news channel.

He was asked whether he would accept that the goof-up damaged the governments credibility even in a small part if not in a big way.

Chidambaram was asked whether the government owed an apology to the two persons named in the fugitives list as hiding in Pakistan but were actually living in India.

"I don't think this is a case we owe an apology to anyone. We expressed regret that there was a genuine human error in not updating the list. To that extent, we have expressed regret and we remain regretful. But I think we have carried the argument too far," he said.

He said the two (named in the list living in India) were fugitives of justice. Red Corner Notices were indeed issued to them. Subsequently they were arrested.

Chidambaram said it is not right to exonerate them at this stage.

"They are accused in grave charges. The mistake was not removing their names from the Red Corner Noticees list and consequently the mistake of by including them in the list handed over by the Home Secretary. I think you are carrying too far by saying that the two are innocent people."
Asked about the implications of the goof-up in the eyes of Pakistan and whether they would be dismissive of the Indian list he said, "I doubt it. See, these lists were exchanged in 2004, in 2007, in 2011. Pakistan has always been dismissive whenever we gave the list in 2004, 2007. They never acted on any list.

To a question whether the mistake would change the dynamics of Indo-Pak relations, he said, "it is embarrassing, but it will not change the dynamics of the the relationship between India and Pakistan or status of discussions because Pakistan has always been dismissive of these lists".

Chidambaram pointed out that soon after the lapse became public he had returned from a trip from Tripura and was "the first to immediately call the press and say we take responsibility".

"Since the list was handed over formally by the Home Secretary, we have taken, what I would call, constructive responsibility," he added.

To a question on criticism that people say it is "incompetence" on the part of the government as a whole and not just the Home Ministry, he said "well, thats a very harsh word. It's a mistake or two mistakes...now if you want to raise it to the level of incompetence, that's your call."

NCW for CBI probe into Gr Noida violence

New Delhi: Backing Rahul Gandhi's claim of police atrocities on farmers in Greater Noida villages, the NCW on Saturday said complaints of molestation, stripping and rape of women as well as of people being burnt alive have come before it and sought a CBI probe to "bring out the truth".

National Commission for Women acting chairperson Yasmeen Abrar, who led a fact-finding team that toured affected Bhatta and Parsaul villages, said they will submit a preliminary report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

"We have formed a 11-member team headed by me and comprising retired judges and civil society activists which will visit the villages again on Monday and Tuesday, carry out further probe and collect evidence," she told reporters here.

The NCW chief, while maintaining that policemen committed "atrocities" on women after the police-farmers clash over a protest on land acquisition issue, said the villagers stopped short of using the word "rape" but indicated towards that.

"Some women alleged that they were raped, but being from a conservative village, they did say it in their own way. They said give the policemen the punishment meted out to rapists. They said policemen barged into their homes, molested them and torn off their clothes...some of them said they did something more than that. What do you make of that," she said.

"One woman said 12-15 policemen surrounded her and assaulted her, tearing off her clothes," she said.

Abrar said 15-20 women gave depositions with their signs or thumb impressions detailing "atrocities" but maintained that till now these are only charges and a CBI probe should be launched "as soon as possible" to "bring out the truth".

"We ask why no FIR was lodged by Uttar Pradesh against local officials? There should a free and fair probe which only CBI can conduct and culprits punished without delay.

I have heard evidence are being destroyed," Abrar said.

She said the women showed them burnt homes and haystacks and alleged that people were burnt and tossed there. "One woman said several men were shot and dumped in the mounds."

Asked whether she saw any bones among the burnt mounds, she said "there was something". To a question if the team collected samples of bones from the site, Abrar said "we will not share all the evidence we got with the media."

When it was pointed out that the UP government said preliminary forensic reports of ashes collected from the area have ruled out presence of human remains, she said, "they did the test in their own labs and we are not satisfied with it."

Asked if she was backing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who also levelled allegations of rape and torching of people, she said "don't bring any political party into this."

However, she launched a full-scale attack on Chief Minister Mayawati saying she should have visited the area and understood the "pains of women there". UP tops in complaints of rape and gangrape coming to the women's panel, she said.

She demanded food and security for the villagers. "Most men are yet to come back to the villages and women feel insecure. There should be lady constables," she said.
