200 Congmen court arrest on 'murder' of fishermen

Chennai, Apr 18 :

More than 200 Congressmen, including TNCC president K V Thangkabalu were arrested when they attempted to take out a march to the office of the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission in the city to condemn the killing of innocent fishermen from Tamil Nadu by the Lankan Navy.

Police sources said more than 200 Congress workers led by Mr Thangkabalu, assembled near the Nageswara Rao Park at Mylapore Area and attempted to take out a march to the Lankan Envoy's office when they were arrested by the police.

Congress sources claimed more than 1,000 party workers, including women, courted arrest during the stir.

The agitation was to condemn the recent torture and killing of four fishermen from Rameswaram whose bodies were found one after other ever since they went missing on April 2.

As the bodies contained several cut wounds, fear gripped the fishing community as they believed that the fishermen were tortured and killed by the Lankan Navy.
